Wow, just wow. I don’t know how I made it so long without ever reading SPEAK, especially with the heaps of praise and awards it’s gotten (and totally deserved).
I wish this was required reading for all freshmen in high school. I finished this book yesterday and I’m still thinking about it a lot, and I can’t wait to reread it again in a few months.
Few YA books have captured high school the way Laurie Halse Anderson has in SPEAK. Everyone has felt – or still feels – like Melinda does. Ignored, misunderstood, outcasted, alone. Even the most popular kids in your high school who seemed like they had everything – some days they felt as horrible and alone as Melinda does. You never know what someone is going through until you take the time to really listen.
If you haven’t read it: read it read it read it. If you already read it: read it again. Instant favorite.
